The Critical Language Awareness movement
What is Critical language?
Critical language is a framework for understanding and describing communication problems. It is a systematic process that allows one to identify and solve problems hidden in pragmatic speech or cultural language. Being critical of language helps us to improve our critical thinking skills and opens us up to a world of worlds or the pluriverse, allowing us to enhance our receptive and productive language abilities. Being critical of the way we use language can improve our relationships with our friends, colleagues, partners, students, and ourselves.
Combating Linguistic Discrimination
If you're reading this, chances are you instinctively know that linguistic discrimination is a problem. Critical language is a tool to unveil the way that people can use language in a way that oppresses others or excludes them from being part of the conversation. It can be hard to spot, but it's everywhere—in conversations with friends, on social media, in our families, and even in ourselves.
Sometimes this can be an innocent mistake. If you're not familiar with how your language might be excluding someone else from participating in the conversation, then it doesn't feel like a big deal when you accidentally say something that isn't inclusive or friendly. But if left unchecked, these little slip-ups can add up until they're so common that they become normal—and then suddenly we find ourselves living in a world where large groups of people are left out of their own communities and denied their basic human rights because they don't fit into our idea of who belongs where. We must be critical of language if we want to avoid linguistic discrimination and foster communities that are safe and welcoming spaces for everyone—no matter their gender, race, religion, or any other aspect of their identity!
That's why I started American English TEFL. I believe that everyone deserves to have a voice—no matter who they are or where they come from—and I want to help make sure that happens by teaching people
how to avoid thought mistakes,
how to communicate through culture
how to become confident speakers
and how to become emphatic listeners
so that you can have easy conversations with people who don't think like you and get your point across and be heard without a fight.
I give you the conscious raising tools to become a truly advanced English speaker prepared to go out into the world and make real change happen!
